Keep Your Countertops Looking Beautiful Over Time With Proper Sealing & Maintenance

One of the major assets of natural stone countertops is that they can be extremely durable. Resistant to scratching, chipping, and temperature differentials, materials like granite, quartz, and marble can look beautiful in a kitchen or bathroom for decades …

…If they’re cared for properly, that is.

In addition to regular maintenance and safe cleaning practices, sealing your natural stone countertops is perhaps the most important factor in keeping your countertops looking nice over time.

When done regularly sealing can help…

  • Protect the natural stone from stains
  • Defend natural stone countertops against scratches and scuffs
  • Maintain the value of natural stone countertops over time

How Often Should You Seal Your Natural Stone Countertops?

Unfortunately, not all stones are created equal. The specific material you choose for your countertops will influence how frequently your countertops will need to be resealed. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend resealing every 2-3 years.

Granite: Annually or As Needed

While some experts recommend sealing granite annually, most in the industry agree that granite can simply be sealed as needed. However, due to granite’s high natural porosity, it’s important not to go too long between sealings. When in doubt, consult with an expert to determine how frequently your specific slab should be sealed.

Quartz: Never

Yep, you read that right! While quartz is technically a natural stone, it’s engineered by compressing quartz into slabs. This means that unlike granite or marble countertops, quartz countertops don’t actually need to be sealed.

Marble: Every 3-6 Months

Luxurious and beautiful, marble is by far the most high maintenance natural stone countertop material. If your heart is set on using marble in your home, prepare to have your counters resealed about 2-4 times per year.
